Funeral Card Friday - Léda Chabot

My second great-grandmother, Léda Chabot, was born on June 6, 1861 to Joseph Chabot and Louise Labrie.  I haven't been able to find her baptism record yet, so my best guess as to Léda's birthplace is Saint-Lazare, Bellechasse, Québec, which is where she was living with her family in 1881.  She married my second great-grandfather, Célestin Bouffard, on July 13, 1881 in Saint-Lazare.  Together they had about 10 children between 1882 and 1901, who were born in Saint-Lazare at first and then later in Sainte-Hénédine, Dorchester, Québec.  At least one child, Catherine Alexandrine Bouffard, died at the age of only 15 months in 1888.  Léda's husband passed away in 1931, at the age of 84.  Léda passed away on October 14, 1956 in Québec.

  1. Linda, I can totally relate to your "About Me" statements. I think I was born wanting to know more about my family history! Although my roots reach in different directions than yours (well, I'm close with Ontario and New York!), in some ways I wouldn't be surprised to see that our mutual interests may reveal kindred spirits.

I hope you are encouraged with your blogging project and that it leads to many further serendipitous discoveries! I found you via GeneaBloggers, and am glad to have been sent in your direction! Best wishes as you continue your research and your blogging.

  3. Hi, Linda. I just looked at the parish records for Saint-Lazare, Bellechasse County in the Drouin Collection at Ancestry.ca, and think I found Léda's baptism record. She appears as "Marie Domitille Chabot", daughter of Joseph Chabot and Louise Labrie, baptised on 7 June 1861 (born "la veille" - the previous day). The rest of the info is in record B36, page 8 (verso), Saint-Lazare, Bellechasse, 1861 (image 9 of 23). If this is indeed your ancestor, it's not that unusual for her to have a different baptismal name than the name she might have used in her daily life. I have a number of (French-Canadian and R.C.) ancestors (male and female) who were given a particular name at baptism, yet used another name as they got older.

    1. Wow, thank you Yvonne! I've done a lot of Drouin Collection research before, but my ancestors' first names had always been included in the baptism record. I'll definitely look into this. Thank you very much again!

    1. Thanks for also looking! These ancestors can be quite tricky, no? I've been thinking of starting back into that side of the family lately (I had done only her husband's line), and this seems to be the perfect motivation and reason to uncover the Chabots!
It's great to have a community of such helpful and kind people with the same interests. I hope I can pay it forward soon. :)
